What are SED, FIPS and ISE drives, and should I avoid them?

SED means the drive encrypts everything it writes. ISE lets it erase itself instantly. FIPS is a certified version of the same hardware. Used enterprise drives occasionally arrive still locked to a former owner's controller, which makes them unusable until unlocked or securely erased. Ask the seller before buying, because a locked drive is a paperweight.
