CMR writes tracks side by side. SMR overlaps them like roof shingles to fit more data, which means rewriting one track disturbs its neighbours. SMR is fine for archives written once and read often. It behaves badly in RAID rebuilds and sustained writes, where it can slow to a crawl. For a redundant pool, buy CMR.
