How many drives do I need for RAID or ZFS?
Three drives is the practical minimum for single-parity redundancy. Past about six drives, move to double parity: rebuilding a large array takes many hours of heavy reads, and the chance of a second drive failing during that window stops being negligible. Mirrors cost more capacity but rebuild far faster.
