Why does the same hard drive have several part numbers?

Manufacturers assign a model number, and every OEM that resells the drive assigns its own order code — a Dell code, an HP code, a NetApp code. The physical drive is identical; only the firmware and the label differ. This is why one drive can appear as a dozen listings at a dozen prices.
