U is a rack unit, 1.75 inches of vertical height. A 1U server is one unit tall, a 4U is four. Height drives fan size, which drives noise: 1U chassis need small fast fans and are loud, while 4U chassis fit large slow fans and run quietly. Depth is a separate measurement and catches people out.
