Decide capacity first, then redundancy, then chassis. Buy drives of the same size, ideally from different batches. Use CMR drives for anything in a redundant pool. Add one drive of parity for small arrays and two once you pass six drives, because rebuild times grow long enough that a second failure stops being unlikely.
