Unmanaged switches just forward traffic. Managed switches let you create VLANs, which is how you keep smart devices, guests and lab machines from reaching each other. If you plan to run anything exposed to the internet, or own devices you do not trust, buy managed — the price difference is small and retrofitting is tedious.
